CONSTRUCTION PROJECT FOR THE EXTENSION OF THE BREAKWATER–WHARF AT SANTA CRUZ DE LA PALMA, LA PALMA (CANARY ISLANDS)

Preparation of the construction design project
Location:
Santa Cruz de La Palma, La Palma (Spain)

Extension of the harbor breakwater by 100 m to allow large cruise ships to berth more safely at the quay attached to the rear side. The main characteristics of the extended breakwater are:
• Caissons of 27 m depth and 25 m width
• Depth at the toe of the berm: -62 m
• Parapet wall with buttresses reaching elevation +12.0 m
• 300 t bollards
The following works have been carried out:
• Geotechnical stability analysis of the breakwater
• Structural analysis of the caisson
• Design of berm protection
• Calculation of mooring and berthing forces
• Overtopping analysis
• Structural design of the parapet wall and cantilever beam
• Replacement project for bollards on the existing quay
• Design verification using Level III methods
