The engineering works for this new S4-RO plant, with a capacity of 70 MGID, included extending the existing intake channel to the project plot, constructing the pumping station, and a discharge system comprising two onshore GRP pipelines with a 1,600 mm internal diameter and a manhole that discharges brine into the existing outfall channel via a hydraulic weir.
The pipeline characteristics are as follows:
. Material: GRP
. Discharge internal diameter: 1,600 mm
. Discharge length: 2 x 2,085 m
For the project, a detailed study was carried out of the following aspects:
. Design of the typical cross-section of the intake channel to prevent soil liquefaction.
. Construction of the pumping station using diaphragm walls.
. The routing of the discharge pipelines was studied in detail, as the new alignments crossed pipe racks and pre-existing infrastructure belonging to other facilities within the complex.
. A recirculation study to confirm that discharge through the existing channel would have a lower environmental impact than through a new outfall pipeline.
