DIFFUSER DESIGN & RECIRCULATION STUDY OF THE INDEPENDENT WATER PROJECT AT BARKA, OMAN

Submarine Pipes

  • Start Date / End Date: 2015
  • Place: Barka (Oman)
  • Scope: Detail engineering
  • Description:

This study has been written to study the dispersion and recirculation of the brine discharged by the new seawater desalination plant which is to be built within the existing industrial complex in Barka.
All intakes and discharges will be analyzed.
Two widely contrasted models (coupled) shall be used for this study:
    1. For the Near field: brIHne. The purpose of this part of the study is to design the diffuser section. The minimum initial dilution achieved is 1:18.3. After having studied the different alternatives, a diffuser was defined with 38 ports separated 4.5 m apart, two outlets at 35º from each port, with an inside output diameter of 115.4 mm.
    2. For the far field: MOHID. Using the local conditioning factors (tide, drift current, wind and bathymetry), the model calculates the hydrodynamics in the study area in 3D for the layers defined in each domain. These hydrodynamics condition determine the dispersion of the existing discharges both at the new desalination plant as well as at the rest of the plants. The objective is to calculate the salinity and temperature of the sea water in all the intakes.
